Nursing Home Sexual Abuse: An "Unchecked Epidemic"

While it may seem unthinkable, it happens: sexual assault in nursing homes has become such a pervasive problem that it is now the subject of a CNN investigation. CNN has found that more than 1,000 nursing homes throughout the country have been cited for mishandling suspected cases of sexual abuse.

Facilities throughout the country have reported that vulnerable senior citizens are being raped and sexually abused by the very people paid to care for them. Even more disturbing is the fact that nursing facilities and the government officials who are supposed to oversee them are doing little to nothing to stop it.

How can this happen? A number of systemic failures are the likely culprit. The CNN investigation reports that nursing homes are slow to investigate reports of sexual abuse for the likely reason of reluctance to believe allegations from memory-impaired people or a desire to hide evidence of wrongdoing. Allegations that made their way to police are often written off because victims are often unable to communicate the incident. Furthermore, state regulators have consistently failed to flag patterns of repeated accusations against individual caregivers. All of these failings have made it easy for perpetrators to get away with their crimes, and harder for victims and families to get justice.
