Distracted Driving & Walking Leave More Pedestrians & Bikers At-Risk

A recent report from Voice2News, LLC estimates that traffic accidents claimed the lives of 6,000 pedestrians in 2016; that’s an 11% increase from the year before! And the staggering statistics don’t stop there. The same report cited a 6% increase in traffic deaths since 2010, marking the highest rate of U.S. road fatalities the country has seen in over a decade. A 25% jump in pedestrian deaths was seen between 2010 and 2015. Across the nation, people are investigating the cause of these untimely deaths, and what they’re finding isn’t all that surprising.

Driver distraction has been a concern for several years now. Throughout the country, states have banned texting and driving, as well as other forms of distracted driving. However, despite concerted efforts from officials, the problem continues, especially among the nation’s teen population; and, the distractions are not limited to drivers. More and more, we’re seeing signs of distracted walking as well as distracted cycling. In fact, 50% of all pedestrian deaths are people aged 5-19.

Across the board, drivers, walkers, and bicyclists distracted by smartphones are finding themselves seriously injured (or worse) in accidents that could have been prevented. The takeaway: It’s the responsibility of everyone on the road, not just drivers, to practice safe habits. Be vigilant. Avoid distraction. And save texts and phone calls for later.

Common types of distraction to avoid while driving, walking, or cycling:

  • Talking or texting on a cellphone
  • Eating or drinking
  • Reading a map or GPS device
  • Grooming or other forms of self-care
  • Fiddling with instruments / devices
  • Watching videos
  • Posting on social media
