Share the Road Safely!

Now that the weather is warmer and the rain has stopped, people are finally getting back outdoors to have fun in the sun. Greenville encourages people to walk, run, bike, and enjoy the outdoors and streets of our beautiful city! Below, we review South Carolina’s state laws regarding pedestrians, bikes, and cars so that we can all share the road safely this summer.

Safety Tips for Sharing the Road

  • According to SC state law 56-5-3110, 56-5-3130, pedestrians have the right of way only if they are already in a crosswalk when a vehicle is approaching. Pedestrians shouldn’t walk out in front of vehicles with the expectation that they will stop for them. Pedestrians are required to obey all traffic signals and right-of-way laws.
  • South Carolina state law 56-5-3420 states that bicycle riders must obey all traffic laws, including stop signs and traffic lights. They also shouldn’t and ride their bikes on sidewalks. Since small children should stay out of the roadway, this is an exception and they should use the sidewalk.
  • Under SC state law 56-5-1520, 56-5-3230, drivers are instructed to slow down and exercise due vigilance and care to avoid an accident whenever approaching pedestrians in the roadway.
  • If a sidewalk is available, all pedestrians, including runners and walkers, should use it. If a sidewalk is not available or it is not practical to use, pedestrians should instead use the left side of the road facing oncoming traffic, and should remain as far as they possibly can from the road. Pedestrians must also yield the right of way to vehicles. South Carolina state law 56-5-3160 asks pedestrians to please observe common-sense safety guidelines and to wear reflective and/or flashing materials when walking or running in low-light times of day.

Keep these safety tips in mind and be alert, nice, and enjoy the summer!
